     Thus “exports of the main cash crop, cashew nuts, fell from an annual average of some 75,000 tons (after shelling) in the early 1970s to less than 10,000 in the last season (1983)”;²⁶ copra fell from 70,000 tons in 1970 to 29,000 in 1980; sugar fell from 265,000 tons in 1974 to 177,700 in 1981; only tea exceeded its preindependence level of production over a similar period, although ultimately it, too, was badly hit as the MNR began to step up its activities in Zambezia Province during the past year or two.
