From 中期英語 spedily, spedili, from 古期英語 *spēdiġlīċe, ġespēdiġlīċe (“prosperously”), equivalent to speedy + -ly. Cognate with Scots spedely, spedelie (“quickly, speedily”). Compare also 古期英語 spēdlīċe (“effectually, effectively, successfully, efficaciously, powerfully, in a manner which produces a result”).
