From Proto-West Germanic *swamm, from Proto-Germanic *swammaz (“tree-fungus, mushroom, sponge”), from Proto-Indo-European *swombh- (“sponge, tree-fungus, swamp”).
Cognate with Old High German swamb (“mushroom”) (German Schwamm), Old Norse svǫppr (“sponge, fungus”), Gothic 𐍃𐍅𐌰𐌼𐌼𐍃 (swamms, “sponge”). More at swamp.
