1. (physiology) The healthy fusion of adjacent bones by the growth of a bony material.

   Coordinate term: synarthrosis

   Examples of normal human developmental synostosis occur in the mandible and in the sacrum.

2. (pathology) The abnormal bony fusion of a joint.

   Synonym: synosteosis

   Various synostoses are typical of Antley-Bixler syndrome.
