Sir Netar Prakash Mallick was born in Blackburn, Lancashire in the 1920s, and attended Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Blackburn. He later attended the University of Manchester and qualified as a doctor in Lahore, Pakistan, before returning to the United Kingdom to practice. Whilst working as a Consultant Renal Physician with the Transplant service from 1973, he developed the internationally recognised Department of Renal Medicine. After much thought, he converted to Catholicism in 1980, was knighted in 1999 for his services to renal medicine and appointed High Sheriff of Greater Manchester in 2002. Sir Netar is a Professor of Renal Medicine and a consultant at Manchester Royal Infirmary., and co-author of the book Prevention of Progressive Chronic Renal Failure.
