distant sequel (plural distant sequels)

1. (film, literature, uncommon) A sequel that continues the story of an earlier work but is set much later in the same fictional timeline, often years, decades, or even centuries after the orignal.
   • 1936, Gilbert Keith Chesterton, Autobiography, page 102:

     Without that distant sequel, the memory may appear as meaningless as the book; but for the moment I can only leave on record here the two facts to which I managed somehow and in some sense to testify.

   • 1981, Sélections Lardanchet (contributor), Bulletin des Lettres‎, page 66:
