From Hebrew אָחָז (acház, “owns”), a contraction of יְהוֹאָחָז (yeho'acház, “Jah has held”). Attested to in Akkadian as 𒁹𒅀𒌑𒄩𒍣 (Yauḫazi).

Ahaz (Hebrew: אָחָז, Modern Aẖaz Tiberian ʼĀḥāz ; "has held"; Greek: Ἄχαζ Akhaz; Latin: Achaz; an abbreviation of Jehoahaz, "Yahweh has held") was king of Judah, and the son and successor of Jotham. He is one of the kings mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew.
