From 中期英語 botswain, botswein, bote-swayn, from late 古期英語 bātsweġen, from bāt (“boat”) + sweġen (“swain”), the latter element a borrowing from Old Norse sveinn (“boy”); equivalent to boat +‎ swain (“boy, servant”).
