Consists of caed- (“to cut”) + -trum. From Proto-Indo-European *keh₂id-, *kh₂eyd- (“to cut, hew”) + *-trom (“instrumental suffix”), related to Latin caelō (“carve”), caelum (“chisel”). Cognate with Ancient Greek κέστρος (késtros, “sharpness”).
