Perhaps from Proto-Italic *meselā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ems- (“black, blackbird”), which is thought to be a northwestern European substrate borrowing. Cognate with Breton moualch (“ouzel”), Welsh mwyalch (“blackbird, thrush”), German Amsel, English ouzel.
