Sunday school (countable and uncountable, plural Sunday schools)

1. A school, organized by a church, that provides religious education to children on Sundays.
   • 1921 November 3, “News of the churches [column]”, in Arkansas Methodist‎, volume 40, number 43, page 14:

     PRIMROSE CHAPEL DEDICATION. Primrose Chapel was organized 54 years ago. Those who organized it and stood faithfully by it in its infancy have nearly all passed to their heavenly reward. The old frame building served well its day and generation, but it had grown insufficient in capacity to accommodate the crowds that attended there regularly. A new and a larger church was badly needed. The new church is a brick veneer with a seating capacity of about three hundred. It is considered to be one of the finest rural churches in this State. It is lighted with a Delco and in all it cost about $7,000. It has a membership of 137, a Sunday school of 80, an Epworth League [chapter] of 93, and a wide-awake Ladies' Aid.

   • 1951 October, “Notes and News: The Harmonium at Troutbeck”, in Railway Magazine, page 709:

     It [Troutbeck] has religious isolation also, for it is several miles—and very strenuous miles in winter—from the parish church at Mungrisdale, and the introduction of the harmonium to the waiting room was due to the zeal of a vicar of many years ago who, in the absence of any other room in the village, obtained permission to use the premises for services, including Sunday School. Most of his successors have continued this self-sacrificing duty.

     Also mentioned is the Rev. T. Stock, who has a tablet in St John's church [Gloucester] and "who with Raikes established the four original Sunday schools in this parish ... in 1780.
