From 中期英語 taven, from Old Norse *tafa, from Proto-Germanic *tabōn (“to grope, feel”). Cognate with Faroese tava (“to endeavour, exert oneself”), Norwegian Nynorsk tava (“to toil in vain”), German zabeln (“to move convulsively, sprawl, flounder”).
