From Proto-Italic *aissus, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eydʰ- (“burn; fire”), with the -tus suffix from Proto-Indo-European *-tus restored via analogy, cf. aestās. Cognate with perhaps aedis, Ancient Greek αἴθω (aíthō)), 古期英語 ād (“pyre”).
