From Ancient Greek ἄλγος (álgos, “pain”) + ἡδονή (hēdonḗ, “pleasure”) + -ics. Coined by Henry Rutgers Marshall in the late 19th century.
The term has fallen into disuse in modern psychology and neurology. However, modern research into the neurology of pleasure and pain has led to the use of the term in management theory.
