From be- + clothe, perhaps continuing 中期英語 *beclothen, *beclathen, *beclethen (suggested by 中期英語 bycladde (“dressed, clad”)), from 古期英語 *beclǣþan, *beclāþian (“to put on clothing, clothe about”), from Proto-West Germanic *biklaiþijan, *biklaiþōn (“to clothe about”).
