Post-Classical, from lū̆ctor (wrestle). Malkiel (1977) compares its formation to that of the earlier-attested pugna (fight, battle, combat) and sees both as precursors to other feminine deverbal nouns in Romance. Compare lū̆ctātiō and lū̆ctāmen.
