Probably a reduplicated form of Proto-Indo-European *pal- (“to feel, touch, shake”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *fifaldǭ (“butterfly”) (whence German Falter), Proto-Slavic *perpelъ (“quail”), Latvian paipala (“quail”), Old Mazanderani پاپلی (pāp(e)lē, “butterfly”).
