From *rūgō (to belch, whence rū̆ctus (“belch”) and ērūgō) + -tō (frequentative suffix), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewg- (“belch, roar”). Cognate with 古期英語 rocettan (“to belch”) and Ancient Greek ἐρεύγομαι (ereúgomai, “to belch, vomit, emit”).
