From 中期英語 snek, sneke, snekke, of uncertain origin. Cognate with Scots sneck. Possibly from 古期英語 *snecce, from Proto-West Germanic *snakikā, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *snak- (“to blow; sniff; nibble”) and thus related to English snatch.
