1. (Cornwall, transitive) To cook (pilchards) on a gridiron.

     The approved method of cooking them [pilchards], according to Mr. Howard Fox, "is to split and pepper, place one fish flat on another, backs outside, and roast on a gridiron." This is the process provincially termed "scrowling."
