Madison Opera is a regional opera company based in Madison, Wisconsin. It was founded in 1961 as an extension of the Madison Symphony Orchestra and came to national prominence with the commissioning and premiering of Shining Brow, the opera about Frank Lloyd Wright by composer Daron Hagen and librettist Paul Muldoon. The artistic director is John DeMain. Allan E. Naplan left as general director at the end of February, 2011, and will be replaced on July 1, 2011, by Kathryn Smith, who comes from the Tacoma Opera. The company performs two major operas a year at Madison's Overture Hall, and one smaller production in the Overture's Playhouse. The company also annually puts on Opera in the Park, an outdoor operatic concert held in Warner Park. Madison Opera has also started Opera Up Close which gives fans a chance to meet the stars of its upcoming Opera Productions.
