Calque of Swedish vendeltiden (literally “the vendel time”). Vendel is a region in Sweden which has given name to the historical period through the rich archeological finds in the area, mostly stemming from warrior boat graves. The most famous finds are period spectacle helmets which have heavily influencing the popular image of the period and the following Viking Age.
