語源
From bed (“bed”) + *law(e) + -ere (agent noun suffix). Multiple theories exist regarding the origin of *law(e):
- Derivation from 古期英語 lǣw (“injury”) or -lǣwe (“having an injury”); however, the putative *beddlǣw or *beddlǣwe would be contrary to the pattern of other formations with lǣw, -lǣwe, where the first element denotes either the injury or its source; compare 中期英語 dronkelewe (“habitually drunk”), thirstlewe (“thirsty”).
- Borrowing from an unattested "laying" sense of Old Norse lag (“layer, deposit”); compare English bedlayer, bedlier (“bedridden person”) and Middle High German betteligeric (modern German bettlägerig) for the formation.
