1. The analysis of rock fabric.
   • 1933 August 7, “Penrose's Party”, in TIME Magazine, volume 22, number 6:

     Specimens of crystalline rock were ground to paper thinness, peered at under the microscope where the force lines spring to view. By plotting hundreds of force lines from different parts of a mountain, he deduces the slidings and thrustings that formed the mountain. He calls his method petrofabrics, thinks it may prove useful in locating ore veins.

   • 1996 December 17, D.G. De Paor, Structural Geology and Personal Computers, Elsevier, page 168:

     Elastic properties of crustal rocks derived from petrofabrics are also useful to characterize seismic reflectors detected during deep continental seismic reflection profiling (e.g., COCORP, ECORS, DCORP, etc.)
