「need not」は、必要性が全くないことを表す表現である。ある行為を行う必要がない、つまりその行為を行わなくても問題ないという意味を持つ。
「worry」(心配する)、 「hurry」(急ぐ)、 「explain」(説明する)などの動詞と一緒に使われることが多い。
1. You need not worry about the test. (あなたはテストについて心配する必要はない)
2. We need not hurry. The train won't leave for another hour. (私たちは急ぐ必要はない。電車はもう1時間出発しない)
3. He need not explain his decision to me. (彼は私に彼の決定を説明する必要はない)
「do not have to」は、「need not」と同様に、ある行為を行う必要がないという意味を表す。しかし、「need not」よりも少し弱いニュアンスを持つ。
「work」(働く)、 「study」(勉強する)、 「pay」(支払う)などの動詞と一緒に使われることが多い。
1. You do not have to work on weekends. (あなたは週末に働く必要はない)
2. We do not have to study all night. (私たちは一晩中勉強する必要はない)
3. They do not have to pay for the meal. (彼らは食事代を支払う必要はない)
「not necessary」は、「need not」や「do not have to」よりもフォーマルな表現で、ある行為が必要でない、つまりその行為を行わなくても問題ないという意味を持つ。
「it is」や「that is」などの表現と一緒に使われることが多い。
1. It is not necessary to bring your own equipment. (自分の機器を持ってくる必要はない)
2. That is not necessary for the completion of the project. (それはプロジェクトの完成には必要ない)
3. It is not necessary to reply to this email. (このメールに返信する必要はない)
