By rebracketing of diminutives such as libellus (liber + -lus) or fēmella (fēmina + -la), where the stem consonants -n- and -r- shifted to -l- by regressive assimilation; also from diminutives of diminutives such as porcellus (porculus + -lus). The vowel -e- appears because the diminutive suffix -ulus descends from older *-elos. Proto-Italic *e was retracted and rounded to pre-Latin -o- when followed by single *l + a vowel other than *i, and pre-Latin -o- was reduced to Latin -u- in non-initial syllables, causing a change of *-elos to *-olos to -ulus. However, retraction did not affect *e before 'exilis' double *ll: hence, *e was retained in -ellus.
The suffix -ellus is added to a noun to form a diminutive of that noun.
When added to an adjective, it forms a diminutive of that adjective.
First/second-declension adjective.
