Heatmiser was an indie rock band that originated in Portland, Oregon in October 1991. Consisting of Elliott Smith (guitar and vocals), Neil Gust (guitar and vocals), Brandt Peterson (bass; later to be replaced by Sam Coomes, frontman of Quasi), and Tony Lash (drums), they were known for their well-crafted lyrics and songs often featuring the juxtaposition of melancholic and cheery words and melodies. The pop-oriented songs of Elliott Smith were a contrast to the darker songs of Neil Gust, while both Smith and Gust's songs touched on subjects such as anger, alienation, loneliness and despair.

Heat Miser is a character from the Rankin/Bass 1974 children's television special The Year Without a Santa Claus. A vaguely demonic ogre-like being, Heat Miser is a blustery, quick-tempered hothead who is ultimately harmless. As indicated in the lyrics of his song ("whatever I touch, starts to melt in my clutch"), Heat Miser can melt objects with a touch, even, implausibly, objects that should combust rather than melt, such as a shovel's wooden handle. In the same song, he mentions his preference for hot weather ("I never want to know a day that's under 60º - I'd rather have it 80, 90, 100º!"). Appearances suggest that the objects he melts are actually transforming into lava. Unlike Snow Miser, there is no evidence that he can restore objects he melts, as Snow Miser can with objects he turns into snow. He can also project intense heat from his hands or mouth, even forming simple objects of flame that can endure independently for a few seconds. His anger comes from the fact he feels Santa is unfair to him by giving his stepbrother, Snow Miser free publicity while he gets none, as well as the claim that their mother preferred Snow Miser over Heat Miser. Otherwise, he isn't malevolent at all.
