From Hrofes (“Hrof's”, see also hrof (“roof”)) +‎ ċeaster (“fortified settlement, town”); however, the first element may instead be a corruption of the earlier Latin name Dorubrevis, itself perhaps from Proto-Brythonic *Doruβrewā, from *dor (“gate, door”), from Proto-Celtic *dwār, + Proto-Brythonic *brewā (“bridge”), from Proto-Celtic *briwā. (However, this etymology is itself speculative as no known Brythonic or other Insular Celtic language attests a reflex of *briwā.)
