First recorded in the 17th century; probably a back-formation from 中期英語 styanye (first recorded in the 15th century), which in turn comes from 古期英語 stīgend (“a small tumour on the edge of the eyelid, stye”), from the verb stīgan (“to climb, ascend, rise”) + 中期英語 eie (“eye”). Equivalent to sty + eye.
stye (plural styes)
Inherited from the oblique forms of 古期英語 stīġ, from Proto-West Germanic *stīgu, from Proto-Germanic *stīgō, related to sty (“pigsty”).
