Probably of Gaulish or other Celtic origin, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *teh₂- (“to dissolve, melt”). The fish was thought to be poisonous, and for the Celtic root compare Old Irish tám (“plague, death”).
This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term. What is the evidence for Celtic origin or for PIE *teh₂-?
