血液やその他の体液中もしくは組織中に存在している生体分子のうち、正常または異常な機能あるいは病態や疾患の徴候となるもの。バイオマーカーは、疾患や病態への治療に身体がどの程度反応しているかを確かめる目的で用いられることもある。「molecular marker（分子マーカー）」、「signature molecule（指標分子）」とも呼ばれる。
