「point」は物理的な指し示す行為を表すのに一般的に使われる。具体的な物や方向を指し示す際に使用される。
to, at, out, towardsなどの前置詞と共に用いられることが多い。
1. He pointed to the door.(彼はドアを指した。)
2. She pointed at the map.(彼女は地図を指した。)
3. They pointed out the mistake.(彼らは間違いを指摘した。)
「indicate」は抽象的な意味での指し示す行為を表現するのに使われる。ある事実や情報を示す、あるいは示唆する際に使用される。
that, whichなどの関係代名詞と共に用いられることが多い。
1. The data indicates that the economy is improving.(データは経済が改善していることを示している。)
2. His behavior indicates a lack of confidence.(彼の行動は自信の欠如を示している。)
3. The sign indicates the direction to the exit.(その標識は出口への方向を示している。)
「refer」はある事物や人物が他の事物や人物を指し示す、あるいは言及するという意味で使われる。特定の主題や話題を指す際に使用される。
to, as, inなどの前置詞と共に用いられることが多い。
1. The term "CPU" refers to the central processing unit of a computer.(「CPU」という用語はコンピュータの中央処理装置を指す。)
2. She referred to the incident as a misunderstanding.(彼女はその事件を誤解と言及した。)
3. The article refers to several studies on the subject.(その記事はその主題に関するいくつかの研究を指している。)
