語源

Equivalent to quot + diēs; some details are unclear. Per De Vaan, the -ī- is by analogy with postrīdiē. The spelling with -tt- appears to be attested earlier in inscriptions, although there is no obvious explanation for the etymological origin of the geminate.

• In early poetry, the first syllable of this word (or that of the derived adjective cotīdiānus) generally occurs in an anceps position, which would allow either a light or heavy syllable. The scansion cŏtīd-, with unambiguously light cŏ-, seems to be first attested in Martial (11, 1, 2). The second syllable normally scans heavy, but the scansion cōtĭd- (or cottĭd-) is found in the manuscripts of Catullus 68, 139: "flagrantem cotidiana/quotidiana/cottidiana". (However, it has been suggested this should be emended to something else like "contudit iram", "condidit iram" or "concoquit iram".)

   • 106 BCE – 43 BCE, Cicero, Cato Maior De Senectute 26:

     Quī etiam addiscunt aliquid? Ut et Solōnem versibus glōriantem vidēmus quī sē cotīdiē aliquid addiscentem dīcit senem fierī.

     What of those [elderly people] who even continue to learn something new? For we see it in Solon, boasting in poetry that he himself is learning something new every day, he says, as he grows older.
