Borrowed from Phoenician 𐤂𐤃𐤓 (gdr /gādēr, gādīr/, “a walled enclosure”); compare Ancient Greek Γᾱ́δειρα n pl (Gā́deira). The change from r to s in Latin is because of ongoing rhotacism at the time, when the two phonemes /r/ and /s/ were still often interchangeable in Latin.
