Leumann 1977 hypothesizes that the term was originally constructed as in- -is (“without”) + *gnō-b(u)lum (“sign of recognition”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵnoh₃-dʰlo-, from *ǵneh₃-, the root of nōscō (“to learn; know, recognize”). Synchronically, it can be analyzed as in- (“not; un-”) + nōbilis (“celebrated; famous; noble”).
Third-declension two-termination adjective.
