From Proto-Italic *steigō, maybe from Proto-Indo-European *(s)teyg-.

Cognate to Latin stilus, Ancient Greek στίζω (stízō, to mark with a pointed instrument) and Proto-Germanic *stikaną (to stick, to stab).
