Uncertain. Possibly a loan from hypothetical Ancient Greek *νάκτης, *νάκται (*náktēs, *náktai), an agent noun from νάσσω (nássō, “to squeeze, press together”). Compare νάκος (nákos, “fleece”). Some assume instead that it originates from Etruscan.
