nonstandard method (plural nonstandard methods)

1. (mathematics, sciences) A method that is beyond the range of standard or traditional approaches, often involving introducing new concepts like infinitesimals or hyperreal numbers in order to solve difficult problems.
   • 1995, Francine Diener, Marc Diener, Nonstandard Analysis in Practice, page 1:

     This idea makes it possible to dissociate completely the logical foundation of the nonstandard method from its practical use.

   • 2009, Marek Kosmulski, Surface Charging and Points of Zero Charge, page 895:

     A nonstandard method (second-harmonic generation) was used in [651], and the purity of the surface was problematic.
