From prō- (“beforehand, fore-”) + videō (“to see”). Compare the parallel formations in Ancient Greek πρόοιδᾰ (próoidă, “to know in advance”), Old Church Slavonic провидѣти (providěti, “to foresee”) and Sanskrit प्रविन्दति (pravindati, “to foresee, anticipate, invent”), from the same combination of roots as well as English foresee.
