Ultimately from an Algonquian language term such as Massachusett/Narragansett saupan (“softened by water”), Munsee nsá·pa·n, or a cognate thereof, whence also English samp. Possibly transmitted via New Netherland Dutch or Jersey Dutch suppaen, sapaen.
