Zembla + -ity. William Boyd coined the term in the 1998 novel Amarillo to mean somewhat the opposite of serendipity: "making unhappy, unlucky and expected discoveries occurring by design". It derives from Novaya Zemlya (または Nova Zembla), an island that was once used for nuclear testing by the Soviet Union. It is a cold, barren land with many features opposite to the lush Sri Lanka (Serendip).
