Ironbottom Soundとは 意味・読み方・使い方

"Ironbottom Sound" (alternatively Iron Bottom Sound or Ironbottomed Sound) is the name given by Allied sailors to Savo Sound, the stretch of water at the southern end of The Slot between Guadalcanal, Savo Island, and Florida Island of the Solomon Islands, because of the huge number of ships and planes that sunk there. Dozens of ships and planes were sunk there during the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942 and 1943. Prior to the war, it was called Sealark Sound. The waters of that area are considered sacred to the United States Navy. Every year on the anniversary of the battle, a ship in the area cruises into the waters and drops a wreath into the water to commemorate those that lost their lives.
