John Daniel "J. D." Sumner (November 19, 1924 - November 16, 1998) was an American gospel singer, songwriter and music promoter noted for his extreme deep bass voice and use of vocal fry. Sumner sang in Southern Gospel Music groups, including the Sunshine Boys from 1949 to 1954, The Blackwood Brothers from 1954 to 1965, the Stamps Quartet from 1957 to 1998 and the Masters V from 1981 to 1988. For eighteen years, Sumner held the Guiness World Record for recording the lowest bass note. As of 2011, he has been surpassed only three times: in 1984 by Mike Holcomb, in 2002 by Tim Storms, and in 2011 by Roger Menees. In 1956, Sumner founded the Gospel Music Association with James Blackwood. He was also the founding force behind The National Quartet Convention.
