George Lorne Monkley (June 24, 1914 - March 8, 1997) He was born and educated in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, the son of Edward H. Monkley and Mae MacDonald. Early in his career Monkley co-owned and operated the Capital Tea Room in Summerside. Monkley served in the Canadian Army during World War 2 with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and the Prince Edward Island Regiment. Monkley was one of three survivors from PEI of the sinking of MV Caribou by a German U69 Submarine on June 14, 1942. Following the war, he served as the OC of PEIR Militia “B” Company, in Summerside where he retired from active duty as a Major. He married Edna Jane Champion in 1939. They had three sons, Edward, Errol and Allen. Immediately following the war, Monkley went to work in Charlottetown for Revenue Canada, followed by a stint with Dept. of Veteran Affairs. In 1949 Monkley moved to Summerside to become the first Secretary-Treasurer of the newly formed Amalgamated Dairies Ltd. In 1959 he was elected as a Progressive Conservative MLA for 5th Prince. In 1959 Monkley was a founding member and served as a Director of Hillcrest Housing Corporation. In 1963 he resigned as an MLA and was appointed as the Clerk of the Legislature. Shortly thereafter he was appointed as the first Chairman of the PEI Civil Service Commission. In 1965 Monkley was appointed Deputy Provincial Secretary, the Senior Deputy Minister for Prince Edward Island. As well, Monkley served as the Province’s Chief Electoral Officer from 1965 to 1978. He was also the Province’s Superintend of Insurance and the only Islander to ever serve as the Superintent of Insurance for Canada. Monkley retired in 1978 and became an avid gardener and golfer. He is buried with his wife in People’s Cemetery at Summerside, P.E.I. He died in Charlottetown at the age of 82.
