It is aligned with the Atlantic coast, and is known for its beaches. A regional bus station is in the center of town by a city park. In July of 2005, the city screened "Cidade de Deus" (City of God), for the public, with over 1000 chairs set up in a park by the beach. The Federal Police blocked the screening with 5 police officers guarding the screen for 2 hours while people waited to see what would happen. Finally, a city official spoke and said the resolution was that since they were a city government, they were allowed to break the rule about showing films rated for 16 and over to children. They gave parents a few minutes to decide to take their kids away, and then showed the film.
