The Viet Cong attack on Pleiku airbase (aka Camp Holloway Airfield) occurred early morning hours (2:00 am) of February 7, 1965'. North Vietnameese Regulars, entered the area specifically for this attack. MACV Air Force base on other side of Plieku was attacked at same time with less casualties and structual damage. Along with Plieku, Bam Me tout was also attacked. Camp Hollaway was hit with mortar, small arms, RPGs. Sactual charges were used on some of the Hueys. Viet who was working on water tower captured before he could blow up tower. Our Fifty-caliber machine guns, on bunkers were not in use. The attack left nine Americans dead and 128 wounded. Attacked lasted about 15 minutes. Americans were able to get gunships up. One crashing on lift off. Mortar rounds walked across houtches where most of casualties occurred. Qui Nhon barracks was attacked three night later on February 10. and it prompted the United States to launch Operation Flaming Dart against North Vietnam in retaliation.
