     The European Union in its present form remains predominantly, despite some supranational features, an intergovernmental organization. In other words, there remains a substantial difference between the project of European political integration and the current product of integration. The postsovereign polity—especially that form of it envisaged by proponents of agonistic democracy—would represent a radical step beyond the intergovemmentalism present in the con-temporary EU. Such a step requires a strong justification. This chapter examines the justifications that can and have been put forward in support of a postsovereign polity in Europe.
