From Scottish Gaelic Ilidh, of uncertain derivation, but Isaac (2005) connects this with a Proto-Celtic root meaning "cry" (c.f. Old Irish ilach (“victorious howl”)) and Coates (2006) argued for Proto-Semitic *ʔil- (“god”).

     The Inverness to Wick line of the late Highland Railway, now L.M.S.R, was diverted inland from Helmsdale up the valley of the Ullie, as, although this entailed a wide circuit, the route offered a considerably easier course from the engineering and gradient point of view than attempting to continue round the coast via Lybster.
