Cognate with Ancient Greek ἐρῳδιός (erōidiós, “heron”) and Serbo-Croatian róda (“stork”), either from a Proto-Indo-European root or more likely a common Mediterranean substrate source, as suggested by the irregular vowel variation and the limited distribution of cognates.
