a study that compares two groups of people: those withthe disease or condition under study (cases) and a very similar group ofpeople who do not have the disease or condition (controls). researchersstudy the medical and lifestyle histories of the people in each group tolearn what factors may be associated with the disease or condition. forexample, one group may have been exposed to a particular substance that theother was not. also called a case-control study.

研究対象となる疾患や病態を有する者（症例）と、非常に似た集団であるが対象となる疾患や病態を有していない者（対照）の2つの集団を比較する研究のこと。研究者らは、各群の病歴や生活歴から疾患または病態に関連する要因を調べる。例えば、ひとつの群がある特定物質に暴露されていたが、もうひとつの群は暴露されていなかったなど。「case-control study（症例対照研究）」とも呼ばれる。
